Great Hearts Middle School League 

The GHMSL is a league that strives for excellence, fun, and a competitive spirit for all middle school level athletes. As a league, we will put the students experience as one of our main priorities. We pride ourselves in providing robust athletics competition for all levels of athletes. We offer three levels of competition within the league. These levels we refer to as A, B, and C, which is based off the high school levels of Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshman. Only A-Teams will have championship brackets.


GHMSL Leadership

Mr. Jon Rickey, Great Hearts Arizona Network Director of Athletics

Jon Rickey was the founding Athletic Director for Glendale Preparatory Academy and is a founding member of the Great Hearts Middle School League, established in 2007. He is currently the Great Hearts Arizona Network Director of Athletics, helping lead and support Great Hearts’ 11 Prep Athletics Programs. Jon graduated from George Fox University in Oregon in Interdisciplinary Studies with emphasis on Education, Coaching, and Youth Ministry. Jon has been involved in interscholastic athletics for over 25 years. Jon strives to mold character, share life experiences, and prepare students for lifelong success. Jon enjoys working with coaches who want to create great people first, and great athletes second. Athletics, done right, can be a catalyst for great things for any student who is willing to be coachable and wants to become better in all aspects of life and sport.

Mr. Blake Schilly, GHMSL Commissioner

Blake Schilly enters his second year as Commissioner of the Great Hearts Middle School League (GHMSL). Prior to joining Great Hearts, Schilly’s sports career encompassed 15 seasons (2004-2018) with the Milwaukee Brewers, most recently serving as Spring Training Business Operations Manager. Schilly also spent 8 years (2007-2015) assisting in the Grand Canyon University Athletic Department, specifically with aspects of student-athlete leadership and development.  With Great Hearts, Schilly will work with Jon Rickey on the day-to-day operation of the GHMSL and oversee scheduling, budgeting and ensuring a positive experience for league stakeholders.
